The Al Hiyar Market and Rest Area, located in Kalba, Sharjah, is envisioned as a contemporary adaptation of the traditional Emirati souk, harmoniously integrated within the scenic Al Hiyar landscape. This project aims to establish a dynamic community focal point, seamlessly merging rural allure with modern conveniences. The market’s architectural design draws inspiration from traditional souks, cultivating a sense of community and interaction through its unique layout, which features open spaces that facilitate smooth transitions between shops and walkways. Incorporating sustainable principles, the design utilizes locally sourced materials and natural shading to minimize environmental impact. The market offers a diverse retail and cultural experience, showcasing a wide array of goods, including fresh local produce, artisanal crafts, and traditional products. Serving as a cultural hub, it will feature an open-air theater, a petting zoo, a plant nursery and a mosque, catering to the community’s diverse needs. The project prioritizes sustainable infrastructure, integrating features such as rainwater redirection systems and natural shading. Construction utilizes stones sourced from local excavation projects, further emphasizing its connection to the surrounding environment.
